At North, there are three teachers with the last name Herrera: psychology teacher Bethany Herrera, math teacher Amie Herrera and Dean Drew Herrera, as well as a relative of theirs in the district, Paul Herrera, who teaches PLTW at Wredling Middle School (WMS). There have been many confusions in the past as to who is related to who and how it all started.
Drew Herrera and Paul Herrera are brothers from Geneva, and both Mrs. Herreras married into the family. Bethany Herrera is married to Paul, and Amie Herrera is married to Drew.
Bethany Herrera was the first from the family to work at North, and she’s been doing so for about 17 years. One of her daughters is a freshman at North, and Drew and Amie Herrera are her Godparents. It just so happened that they applied here as well when they noticed a job opening.
Drew Herrera has been working at North since 2022, but he has been in education for a very long time. He was a Dean and teacher in Buffalo Grove and student taught at WMS, before eventually settling at North.
“I worked for 12 years up in Buffalo Grove,” said Drew Herrera, “But I live around here so that’s a really long drive.”
Amie Herrera has been working at North for eight years. She previously student taught at St. Charles East before settling here.
“I student taught at East and then there just happened to be an opening [at North], so I decided to apply for this one,” said Amie Herrera. “It was kind of an easy switch over and it was just an added bonus that I got to be somewhere where my family was.”
Being able to work at the same school as her husband has provided Amie Herrera with a higher level of comfort and support than she had previously.
“…If I’m having a bad day, I have someone that’s right there that I can go to that knows me and that can kind of help me through it and talk with me,” said Amie Herrera.
Bethany Herrera’s favorite part of working at North is similar as she also appreciates being surrounded by her family and work every day.
“I’m investing time and effort into my school community and family community at the same time,” said Bethany Herrera.
