I found my “Deeper Well” at Kacey Musgraves’s “Deeper Well” World Tour this past week. On Sept. 12, Kacey Musgraves came to the Allstate Arena located in Rosemont. Where she put on the best show because of her detailed sets and her strong connection with the audience.
Musgraves is a singer, songwriter and producer of country music. She has a new and edgy style that makes her relatable to fans of all types of music. Musgraves said herself, “Undeniably, I’m a country singer; I’m a country songwriter. But I feel like I make country music for people who like country music and for people who don’t.”
I’m not a country fan, but I like a lot of her music even though it has a country spin on it. For example, “Rainbow” and “Deeper Well” are more melancholy and contemporary tunes compared to “Family is Family” and “Follow Your Arrow” which have great guitar riffs and country styling. Before going to the concert, I listened to her newest album, “Deeper Well” and her older albums including, “Star Crossed,” “Same Trailer Different Park,” “Pageant Material” and “Golden Hour.” Musgraves has also contributed to some popular collabs such as “She Calls Me Back” featuring her and Noah Kahan, “I Remember Everything” featuring Musgraves and Zach Bryan, and “Don’t Do Me Good” featuring Musgraves and Madi Diaz. This new album “Deeper Well” draws from Musgrave’s love of nature. It is present in the lyrics of some of the songs and on the cover art of the album. I was very excited to see how this would all be represented artistically at the concert, and I was not disappointed.
The show opened with Nickel Creek and Father John Misty. Each group played about 10 songs each to showcase their vast musical talents. Nickel Creek, one of the openers, gave me folk and country vibes. This was a nice lead into Kacey Musgraves’s similar style. Then Father John Misty came in with some folk and alternative rock. He brought great energy and infectious rhythms. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed both bands even though I am not a big fan of alternative or folk rock.
Musgraves took the stage around 9:30 p.m. Her stage design was magical and gave off a whimsical nature-type vibe. There was a moss platform in the middle of the arena with an orange saturn hanging from the ceiling. It was very surprising to see a Saturn hanging from the ceiling, as this was pulled from lyrics in one of Musgraves’s songs, “Deeper Well.” Then, on the main stage, there were cool lighting effects and a green hill near the back of the stage. One of the coolest effects was the fog that hung over the hill and flowed to the bottom of the stage. This created a very peaceful atmosphere in the arena and went well with the country flare of her music.
Kacey Musgraves played a lot of guitar which showcased how musically talented she is. I enjoyed the show and was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what song would be played next in her set list. She gave an entertaining performance, and she had great comedic timing when conversing with the audience. When it comes to her singing, she nailed it. Her singing quality was loud enough to fill the arena with joy, but she still kept the style of her music throughout the whole concert. When she sings lower or higher in a song she is still filling the arena with sound. She kept the mood fun and peaceful and her beautiful stage design brought it all together.
She closed the night with an encore of one of my favorite songs, “Rainbow.” This song is all about how we all go through hard times, but if we look on the positive side, we can get through it. This was a very emotionally impactful way to end the concert. Overall, this concert was great and supported her message of everyone being one with nature and being at peace with one another.
