Last Saturday, Dec. 7, the annual Princess Superhero Breakfast was held in North’s cafeteria from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. It is a children’s event run by student council to which little kids can come to North to have breakfast with their favorite Disney princesses and superheroes. There are many activities the kids can participate in such as coloring, face painting, singing along to Disney songs, playing parachute and other games.
Student council runs the event as well as participates as princesses and superheroes for service hours. This year, the event was led and organized by class president Aliya Clayton.
“Princess Superhero Breakfast was started a long time ago by the senior student council class and has become a staple for the student council’s end-of-the-year activity,” said Clayton. “It’s one of my favorite activities my class organizes, providing an opportunity to give back to the community and bring holiday spirit for the end of the year.”
Planning the breakfast takes almost a month to complete.
“We spend a lot of the time figuring out who will play what character, texting and emailing people in our grade to play a princess or superhero for service hours for their clubs. Even getting someone to play Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus,” said Clayton.
Buying costumes for the characters is another major aspect of the breakfast. Costumes are checked to make sure that all the pieces are intact and that the outfit is in good enough condition to wear.
“Throughout this whole process, we buy food for the event, get someone to do face painting and take pictures at the event. … The day before, we went into the cafeteria and set up fun games, reading nooks, coloring stations, Disney sing-along videos and other activities for kids. Overall, it is a very fun event,” said Clayton.
Santa, who was at the event, talked about his experience with the kids.
“Some kids are a little shy, while others rush to cut the line to talk to me,” said Santa.
He enjoyed the breakfast and making the kids smile.
“When I was asked to come to the Princess Superhero Breakfast, I [definitely] wanted to take the opportunity. [After all], I’m just Santa’s little helper,” said Santa.
There are many ways to get involved with this event. Students can volunteer to be a princess or superhero, work at the face-painting station, take pictures at the breakfast or lend a hand to student council. Junior Alexandra Murphy, who is part of student council, set up the backdrops, tables, and decorations for the breakfast.
“[Student council] also go and buy food like donuts, pastries, coffee, cereal, fruit, etc. It’s a big effort from everyone in council even though seniors plan it. They need everyone’s help to pull it off,” said Murphy. “[We love] keeping the magic alive for [kids] since most of them still believe in [the characters.]” The student council loves helping out and hanging out with kids as characters.
The Princess Superhero Breakfast is a way to get involved with the community through a fun event that brings the whole family together. This is done all while getting money for the senior student council class to use for the senior events that happen towards the end of the year.
“Personally, I love seeing the smiles on the kid’s faces when they see the character they love interacting with them or taking pictures with them,” said Clayton.
