For the first time, the Homecoming tradition of golf cart decorating has been moved to Compass Academy. In previous years, students and advisers had decorated their golf carts here at North. But recently, there have been some issues with transporting the golf carts.
The main reason golf cart decorating was moved is due to the difficulty of getting the golf carts between North and downtown St. Charles. In the past, over 45 golf carts have been transported from North all the way to downtown. This takes a lot of time and effort, causing Student Council to reassess the current methods. In the end, they landed on decorating the golf carts at Compass to decrease the amount of driving back and forth with all the golf carts, making it both safer and more convenient.
“It made a lot of sense to just be able to decorate where the parade actually happens, and Compass is the closest to that,” said Rebecca LaPorta, assistant principal of Student Life.
Instead of gathering in the courtyard of North, students will now decorate carts at Compass. Students can either take shuttle buses or drive down to Compass. And when it comes to transporting materials, students can drive themselves or have advisers or parents bring the materials.
“I know a few of the student groups that I’ve spoken to, the advisers or the coaches are taking care of bringing supplies to Compass, or if there’s upperclassmen who are driving are bringing the supplies to Compass. I’ve also spoken to a few parents that are volunteering to help decorate golf carts, and they’re the ones bringing supplies, but you could bring a bag of supplies on the school bus if you take the shuttle to Compass,” said LaPorta.
Despite the extra hassle, LaPorta and the rest of the Student Life team remain committed to making sure students have the best Homecoming experience possible.
“I will do anything to help groups, to make sure that they feel like they have what they need, and that it’s still a really fun experience,” said LaPorta.
