On Friday, Oct. 7, Clay Heilman, junior, competed in the golf state tournament at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington, placing 37th overall.

The golfers shot one round on Friday and then advanced to Saturday if they made the cut. Heilman shot 79 on Friday and 80 on Saturday.

“His average this year is right around that 72/73 mark, and he shot a 79 and 80. Just a couple of shots here and there that I think he would love to have back,” said Peter Gleason, boys golf coach.

This was Heilman’s first experience at the golf state tournament.

“I mean, the conditions were pretty tough. It was cold and windy. But it was my first time being down there, so I have the feeling that there’s got to be a little bit [of nerves] and I struggled to overcome,” said Heilman.

At sectionals, the team was three points short of making it to state and bringing the entire varsity golf team. They look forward to next year in hopes of making it down to state as a whole team, especially since most of the team are juniors or younger and will be back next year.

“We have a good team coming back. So I’m hoping that it’s just kind of makes them hungry,” said Gleason.
