People yearn for control and connection. What better way to achieve the two than a game where you can one: make every character, two: choose what they talk about and three: police every decision they make. Although this sounds a little intense, this game has captured the hearts of hundreds of players.
“Tomadachi Life” was originally released worldwide in 2014 on the 3DS. It sold 6.72 million copies since its release, and was loved by players for the humor incorporated into the game. Nintendo then revamped the game and released the second in the series, “Tomadachi Life: Living the Dream,” on April 16. Before the actual game was released there was a demo version that allowed players to get a taste of it.
In the game, you are prompted to create different characters, and people have taken full advantage of this. Players have made everyone from their friends to celebrities to inanimate objects. Then once these characters, also known as “Miis,” have been created, they interact with each other. They can either do this naturally, or the player can facilitate their relationships. When the player gets involved, the “Miis” will prompt the player for topics to chat about. Once the player enters topics, they will talk about them consistently.
This game is the best game I have played since Animal Crossing. Although the premises are similar, the way “Tomadachi Life: Living the Dream” is completely customizable makes it so much more personal. I have made characters based off of my friends, characters from shows I enjoy, emojis and even a pomegranate. This game is a dream for artists, as there is just so much room for creativity.
The cutscenes available are incredibly funny, and although they can get repetitive, they still maintain their charm. Watching the “Miis’” relationships develop is entertaining, especially because of the different dynamics. Some of them become friends, good friends, or even fall in love and get married. The characters can even have children, which has been a widely enjoyed event for many players.
The freewill able to be exercised in this game makes it one of the best in 2026. Although this game was released alongside “Pokopia” which follows a similar dynamic, I find “Tomadachi Life: Living the Dream” to be much more interesting. If you are someone who enjoys a non-stressful activity to relax, “Tomadachi Life: Living the Dream” is the game for you.
